Joy is an AI-powered preventative healthcare platform that helps health professionals capture and process consultations automatically, while referring people into preventative services.
Healthcare professionals struggle to connect patients with the right local services. Referral routes are fragmented and hard to access in the moment, leaving many patients without the support they need.
I addressed this by designing a tool that leverages AI to surface timely, relevant preventative support options during the consultation and by streamlining the referral flow end-to-end. This led to clearer options for clinicians, faster decisions, and fewer missed opportunities for preventive care.
Mapping needs across all three groups to align the system, surface opportunity areas, and design a unified preventive pathway.

The average GP consultation lasts 10-12 minutes. Within that window, doctors move through three distinct stages - from understanding medical history to offering diagnosis and treatment options, to documenting the visit. Each stage contains multiple steps, all competing for limited time.

Understanding this baseline was critical. Any new solution would need to integrate seamlessly into an already-established workflow while challenging behaviours that have been standard practice for decades.
A small widget that fits seamlessly into the clinician’s existing system. Joy captures the consultation, processes the admin, and surfaces insights, while the clinician stays focused on the patient and preventative care.
Joy records the consultation in the background.

Joy processes the recording allowing the HCP to review, notes, referral letters etc.

Joy provides referral options based on patient record, and consultation information.

Patients and providers receive updates about the referral.

Once the patient attends the service, Joy collects data/ feedback from the provider and patient to track impact.

Health professionals receive updates about the patient's wellbeing over time.

While the new flow focuses heavily on recording and processing the consultation, the intention was never just to reduce admin. The real goal was to create a path for health professionals to easily refer patients into preventative support, something that wasn’t really possible in the existing workflow.
Clinicians told us that prevention mattered, but with limited time, no access and high admin load, it simply wasn’t realistic. So we reframed the problem: instead of asking clinicians to change their workflow, we used the medical scribe as the entry point for prevention.
By capturing the consultation automatically, Joy can surface clear signals from the conversation and patient record. These signals then power relevant, contextual referral recommendations, making prevention both easier and more likely to happen.
We used the scribe as a trojan horse. It solved a real problem for clinicians (admin), while quietly unlocking a smarter, more proactive way to identify and act on preventative opportunities.
